After being in the HVAC industry for over 20 years, our employees know just how many myths there are out there when it comes to heating and air conditioning.
We wanted to sit down today to debunk some of these myths and help you understand where they even came from in the first place.

1. The Bigger The Unit, The Better It Will Work:
This is something we hear a lot from customers or anyone looking for a new HVAC system. Although in reality, while larger HVAC units are more powerful than smaller units, a bigger HVAC system may not be the best choice for your home or project. If the system you install is too big for your home/project, it will use much more energy than needed, wear your machinery/equipment down faster, and likely increase the humidity in your home.
This is why it is always best to consult with a HVAC professional when installing a new HVAC system in your home or construction project.
2. You Only Need To Change Your Filters Once A Year:
If you wait a whole year to replace your filters, you may experience more airborne particles like dust, grime and debris in your home.
To keep the air in your home clean and clear of any airborne particles, you should be replacing your filter every few months. This will not only improve the air quality in your home, but will keep your HVAC system as energy efficient as possible.
3. Turning Your System On And Off Will Help Reduce Energy Consumption:
While turning your appliances and lights off to reduce energy use may work for you, the same logic does not apply to your HVAC system.
Actually, turning your system on and off multiple times will consume more energy than usual. If you are worried about energy consumption, there are programmable thermostat systems you can buy that will allow you to lower the settings when you're not home or when you're sleeping, which will help you consume less energy overall.
4. Setting Your Thermostat Extremely Low/High Will Help You Reach Your Desired Temperature Sooner:
Did you know that your HVAC system is working the hardest whenever it's adjusted to a new setting? Yes, it really is.
This is exactly why turning your thermostat extremely low or extremely high to help you reach your desired temperature sooner does NOT work. Not only will it NOT make your system work any faster, it will make your HVAC system work harder meaning it will waste more energy and strain your equipment.
5. Close The Vents In Empty Room To Increase Energy Efficiency:
While it may seem logical to close a vent in an empty room so you don't have to pay for the energy used to heat/cool that room, in reality it may actually be costing you more in the long-run.
By doing this, you are actually interfering with your home's air flow which can cause blockages in your vents and make your system work harder than it needs to.
At the end of the day, this does more damage to your system than it does save you energy or money as your system was not designed for these vents to be closed. There are plenty of other ways to save energy within your HVAC system.
